Alternative Lending Mortgage Underwriter

THE OPPORTUNITY: As a member of the Alternative Lending Credit Operations team, you will be responsible for reviewing and analyzing incoming applications to ensure they are complete and comply with established credit policies.



Role Specific Accountabilities include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Verify/validate all required mortgage/client information relative to a near prime environment
  • Provide timely and accurate credit decisions to mortgage originators
  • Negotiate, structure and evaluate mortgage applications with the defined scope of approval authority
  • Evaluate residential appraisals with a detailed approach, escalating any marketability concerns
  • Prepare recommendations from residential loans that are over defined scope of approval limit and present submissions to the appropriate authority level
  • Ensures awareness and compliance of all aspects of the QA and Audit program
  • Maintain knowledge of all applicable underwriting guidelines
  • Fraud detection and mitigation
  • Performs daily pipeline management
  • Provides excellent service to all partners and end users


Educational /Technical Experience:

  • University/College degree in related field preferred
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience performing all underwriting procedures in accordance with established guidelines
  • Alternative mortgage lending experience mandatory
  • Experience reading financial reports and personal income tax returns required
  • AMP designation/in progress is considered an asset

  • Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal
  • Able to adapt communication based on end user/audience (e.g. broker preferences)
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines            
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word/Access/PowerPoint/Excel
  • Working knowledge of Internet and Email Applications (Outlook/Outlook Express)
  • Excellent judgment / must be able to make independent decisions
  • Above average analytical skills; able to read and work using various reports (e.g. pipeline, SLA)
  • Ability to negotiate with key stakeholders
  • Excellent understanding of real estate transactions and residential property valuation
  • Self-Motivated / proactive mindset with the ability to remain flexible. Ability to think creatively and suggest improvements to better the team and company – THINK DISRUPTIVELY!
